Water continuously freezes inside a stainless steel cylinder while a massive, rotating extruder auger scrapes it off and compresses it into nuggets. However, hard water is the mortal enemy of this process. Calcium scale rapidly builds up on the internal cylinder, creating a rough, abrasive surface. As the auger rotates against the scale, it grinds violently, creating a horrific high-pitched squealing noise. If neglected, the auger motor will completely seize. Additionally, scale easily blinds the sophisticated WaterSense Adaptive Purge Control probes, causing the machine to continuously overflow or shut down entirely.
