Insulation Installed to the Wrong Specification
Wine cellars require R-15 to R-20 walls and R-19 to R-40 ceilings. General contractors routinely install standard R-11 — adequate for residential walls, insufficient for a space maintaining 55°F against a Houston summer exterior.
The material choice matters as much as the R-value. Closed-cell spray foam delivers R-7 per inch and functions as its own vapor barrier, eliminating a separate installation step.
